New Kent County warns of scammers impersonating law enforcement

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The New Kent County Sheriff's Office has warned residents of scammers impersonating deputies to contact community members.

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, the sheriff's office shared a post that said scammers are calling New Kent residents, falsely stating they have an arrest warrant for missing jury duty and demanding payment as a resolution.

Residents are asked to remember:

  • The sheriff’s office will never call and ask for payment
  • They'll never demand payment over the phone, by gift cards, prepaid cards or electronic payment apps
  • Any jury-related issues are addressed through official court paperwork and not phone calls

If you receive a call similar to this, do not provide personal information. Hang up the phone immediately and report the call to the New Kent County Sheriff's Office.
