NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- New Kent County's own Grayson Torrence sang her heart out to win a spot in American Idol's Top 24.

During Monday night's episode of American Idol, Torrence and fellow Hollywood hopeful Penny Samar faced off in a head-to-head duet challenge for a chance to win a spot in the Top 24.

Torrence expressed anxiety during pre-performance interviews. She said she knew Samar would do well, but admitted she was worried about her own abilities.

"I'm hoping that all my hard work pays off," Torrence said.

Samar and Torrence chose to sing "Wildflower" by Billie Eilish. The performance began with the two sitting on stage together. It ended with both young women hugging one another, shedding tears.

Judges Lionel Ritchie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan praised their rendition of Eilish's Billboard Hot 100 song, saying their voices complemented one another beautifully.

Rather than send either Samar or Torrence home, the judges gave both women a spot in the Top 24.
