New traveling exhibit opening at Children’s Museum of Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A new science exhibit about three modes of transportation is coming to the Children's Museum of Richmond on May 20.
The 1,500 square foot traveling exhibition, "From Here to There," will open at the museum on Tuesday, May 20, and run until Sunday, Sept. 7. The museum will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 19.
The showcase will be color-coded, and children will have the opportunity to explore three main transportation categories: land, sea and air through 11 hands-on exhibits, including a hovercraft ride, rocket launch, boat float and more to learn about the laws of motion.
Visitors launch a hot air balloon, operate a canal lock system to move a boat from one water level to another and learn about pneumatics, pulleys, hydraulics and levers to immerse themselves in the world of mechanics.
“Each exhibit is designed to spark conversation and encourage interaction among families, friends and fellow museum visitors. Kids learn best in hands-on environments with play as the catalyst,” said Danielle Ripperton, CMoR’s Executive Director.
The showcase will also include a machine-based exhibit, "Simple Machine," and water-related ones like "Water Locks" and "How Do Boats Sail Into the Wind?" Visitors can learn about friction at the "Carry That Weight" exhibit and international combustion engines at the "Right Engine for the Job" exhibit.
There will also be a ball-pit, where children can send colored balls through an air channel to another air transport station.
