No one is injured after train derailed off tracks in New Kent County spilling coal into surrounding area

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- No one is injured after a train derailed off of tracks in New Kent County Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the New Kent County Sheriff's Office reported that a train carrying at least fifteen coal cars and two locomotives derailed, spilling coal the wetlands area, according to social media post by the New Kent Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred on the railroad tracks between Roxbury Road and South Mountcastle Road, according to the sheriff's office.

There are no reported injuries at this time, per the New Kent Sheriff's Office.

County Sheriff's are still on the scene of the incident to assist with the train derailment, however, there is no information at this time as to what caused it.

Emergency personnel from different localities including, New Kent, James City and Charles City County are currently on scene and "managing the incident."

The investigation into what caused the derailment will be lead by CSX Police, according to New Kent sheriff's.

At the time of reporting the county says that "the only vehicular roadway impacted by this incident is Barnetts Road in Charles City County." The county followed that up by stating, "Residents are urged to avoid the area and allow emergency crews and railroad officials to safely conduct recovery operations."
