Officials say no after-action report will be conducted following Belle Isle shooting injuring park ranger
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A spokesperson for the City of Richmond has said that an after-action report will not be conducted following a shooting at Belle Isle in January that injured a park ranger.
Tamara Jenkins, senior public information manager for Richmond's Office of Strategic Communications and Civic Engagement, told 8News on Tuesday, May 20, that there will not be an after-action report into the Belle Isle shooting on Jan. 19.
Jenkins said the only investigation being conducted is that which is being carried out by the Richmond Police Department.
This follows an announcement shared by Jenkins to 8News on Jan. 28, that stated the investigation by police is "a critical piece for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities after action report."
When the shooting occurred, Jenkins said the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities took a look at the scope of the park ranger's responsibilities and adapted them to be more focused on community engagement.
At 1:42 p.m. on the day of the shooting, police reportedly received a call for a person shot.
When officers arrived on scene they found an Urban Park Ranger who told police that he was interacting with a man in a wooded area of the park, and when he offered him services for shelter he produced a firearm and shot the ranger in the chest.
The ranger was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to police, and he had minor injuries. The ranger met with a detective and was checked out at a local hospital.
