Parts of Quioccasin Middle School rezoning changes removed due to capacity issues
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Henrico School Board is making yet another change to its proposed redistricting plan following Thursday's work session. This time, they are removing parts of the rezoning changes to Quioccasin Middle School.
During a county school board meeting on Thursday, Oct. 9, board members decided to remove parts of the Quioccasin Middle School rezoning changes from its proposed redistricting plans, which would have affected Quioccasin and Tuckahoe middle schools by shifting student attendance zones.
The school board noted that this news comes after recently released student enrollment figures for the 2025-26 school year. According to the school board, the new data showed a slight decrease in total enrollment and an increase at the middle school level.
The boundary adjustments aim to address overcrowding, following community feedback from parents, students and staff.
Per the school board, portions of two scenarios would have affected Quioccasin and Tuckahoe middle schools by shifting student attendance zones for Brandon, Deer Lodge, Moreland West and Sleepy Hollow for the first section, and Andover Hills, Mayland Townes, Pemberton Oaks and Westbriar for the second section.
The adjustment would have reportedly increased capacity at Tuckahoe Middle School to over 100%. This follows the most recent notable changes made by the school board during a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 25, where they dropped two of the seven original proposed redistricting plans and revised a third -- Quioccasin Middle School plans -- some of which have since been removed as of Thursday.
At the time, students currently zoned for Pocahontas Middle School were no longer affected by the scenario, per the school board's decision.
In addition to the removal of Quioccasin Middle School scenarios, the school board also reaffirmed its plan for the middle school attendance zone for students living in the affected neighborhood to change from Tuckahoe Middle School to Quioccasin Middle School. The adjustment means that Ruby F. Carver Elementary School students will either attend Quioccasin Middle School or Pocahontas Middle School.
The Henrico School Board emphasized that if boundary adjustments are approved ahead of the upcoming 2026-27 school year, students in grades 5, 8, 10, 11 and 12 -- the current year the scenario is implemented -- can choose to stay at their current schools.
Parents and families are urged to attend the Boundary Adjustment Public Hearing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23.
