Parts of Sandy River Road in Prince Edward remain closed as bridge repairs get underway

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Parts of Sandy River Road in Prince Edward County will remain closed for another month due to bridge repairs.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reportedly told the county that repair work will begin on Monday, Aug. 11, according to a social post from the county on Friday, Aug. 8.

This comes more than a week after the county shared on Facebook that VDOT closed Sandy River Road (Route 612) from Miller Lake Road (Route 613) to Quail Crossing Road (Route 611) on Wednesday, July 30, due to reported structural repairs on the bridge structure over Sandy River.

On July 30, the county announced the temporary detour from Miller Lake Road to Quail Crossing Road back to Sandy River Road would be in place, and a permanent detour would be implemented the following day, on Thursday, July 31.

The county said bridge repairs will be completed and the roadway will reopen by Monday, Sept. 8.

Central Virginia has experienced significant rainfall over the summer, with Prince Edward County seeing severe flooding -- as much as five inches of rainfall -- that left backyards and roadways washed out on Wednesday, July 9.
