Petersburg Gas Company building, other historic sites get state landmark designation
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — An 1851 building in Petersburg and seven other historic sites in Virginia have recently been designated as state landmarks.
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) announced on Wednesday, Dec. 17, that its board has approved several properties for designation on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) during a Dec. 11 meeting.
The VLR is the Commonwealth's official list of places of historic, architectural, archaeological and cultural significance, per the release.
The Petersburgh Gas Company building was built in 1851 for the business and manufactured gas for government, commercial and residential use for over a century. The building was damaged during the Civil War and underwent renovations after, according to the release.

DHR said the facility's renovations and the changing trends in production "reflect the development and evolution of the gas industry in Virginia and the United States from the antebellum period through the mid-20th century."
Seven other sites across the state also received the VLR designation, which are:
- Wachapreague Historic District in Accomack County
- The Barcroft Apartments in Arlington County
- Ingalls Field in Bath County
- Shockeysville Church and Cemetery in Frederick County
- Laurel Hill Farm in Loudoun County
- Mount Jackson Colored Cemetery in Shenandoah County
- Motley's Mill Dam and Mill Pond in Pittsylvania County
DHR said its next step is to forward the documentation for the newly designated sites to the National Park Service for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
