Petersburg home deemed uninhabitable after fire

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A Petersburg home has been deemed uninhabitable after officials said a fire raged from it Tuesday evening.

At 8:04 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, units from the Petersburg Department of Fire, Rescue and EMS were dispatched for a reported structure fire on Chappell Street.

When firefighters arrived minutes later, they found a two-story home with heavy smoke on the second floor. No one was inside at the time, and the home appeared to be vacant.

According to officials, a person was sitting outside the home who had minor burns on his fingers and soot in his throat. He was taken to a local hospital.

The fire was extinguished by 8:15 p.m., officials said. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
