PHOTOS: Chesterfield community honors off-duty firefighter who died after motorcycle crash

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Families, community members and other Chesterfield personnel, including Chesterfield County Fire and EMS firefighters, gathered on Sunday to honor the 23-year-old firefighter, who died -- while off-duty -- two days earlier in a motorcycle crash.

On Sunday, Nov. 9, the prayer service was held at the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center, located at 6610 Public Safety Way, where the Richmond metro community honored 23-year-old Sammy Ershidat, who died on Friday, Nov. 7, following a crash.

According to a social post from Chesterfield County Fire and EMS, fire departments from Richmond, Henrico, Goochland, Petersburg and Colonial Heights provided mutual aid so Chesterfield firefighters could attend the prayer service and burial.

"We ask that you continue to keep Sammy’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers," a social post from Nov. 8 reads.

Ershidat was a career firefighter with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS. He was assigned to Engine 211 and worked the “C” shift at Fire Station 11, located on Iron Bridge Road.

He graduated from Recruit School 68 in 2024 and had been working as a firefighter for nearly two years, per fire officials.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, he was driving a motorcycle east on W. Hundred Road, approaching Womack Road, when he collided with a white Nissan Altima pulling out from the Grand Oaks Apartments.
