PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Prince George County hosted Clean Community Day in late-April, with an increase in participation seen since last year's event.
According to a county spokesperson, the annual event provides residents with a convenient way to dispose of household hazardous waste, tires and specific unwanted items for free.
Two drop-off locations were available for residents, with the cleanup day being hosted on Saturday, April 26.
A total of 620 vehicles participated, the spokesperson said, with an increase of 36 vehicles since the event in 2024.
Analysis from drop-off locations reportedly shows that a total of 143,688 pounds, or 71.77 tons of waste was collected.
In addition, the county said that during the day, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers picked up litter on county roadsides, with 76 bags of waste collected.

Other folks who assisted throughout the day included Master Gardeners and CERT Members who volunteered to help direct traffic and collect data from residents dropping off items for disposal. Police personnel also assisted with security and in directing traffic.
The spokesperson said the total cost for the event was about $34,392.82, but a Litter Prevention & Recycling Grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for $19,870.72 was awarded to Prince George County on Nov. 6, 2024. These funds applied towards the cost of this event, which the county said leaves $14,522.10 in costs footed by taxpayers.
The next Clean Community Day scheduled for October is expected to cost taxpayers about $35,000. Funding has been proposed in the FY26 County budget for consideration of approval on May 27, according to the spokesperson.
The county said the event was sponsored by the County of Prince George and the Prince George Extension Agency. Participating companies included ECO FLO, Shred It, Meridian Waste Services, and Emanuel Tire.
