Woman in wheelchair injured in Richmond hit-and-run, police seeking SUV driver

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department is searching for the driver of a Ford SUV involved in a hit-and-run incident with a woman in a wheelchair.

At 4:06 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, officers responded to the intersection of Belvidere and Leigh Streets for a reported hit-and-run.

Upon their arrival, the officers found a woman in a wheelchair who had reportedly been hit by a vehicle. She was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were considered non-life-threatening.

"Preliminary information indicates the woman was struck while in the crosswalk crossing Belvidere Street, though investigators have not yet determined which party had the red signal," a release from the police department reads. "The driver left the scene prior to officers arriving, traveling northbound toward the I-64/I-95 interchange."

Detectives with the police department are now attempting to identify a dark-colored Ford SUV believed to be involved in the incident.
