PHOTOS: Resurrection Sunday and Free Family Festival celebrates worship

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond church invited families to come out on a warm Easter Sunday morning for the Resurrection Sunday and Free Family Festival.

The event took place at Awaken Church RVA, located at 3800 Deepwater Terminal, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 20. The service and festival aim to celebrate hope in worship and community.

The festival featured bouncy houses, cotton candy, games and prizes.

8News got the chance to speak with Nicholas Jenkins, senior pastor at Awaken Church RVA, about how this event supports the Richmond community.

Jenkins said Awaken Church RVA, which has been doing ministry in the Central Virginia region since 2018, partnered with Freckles and Friends Animal Sanctuary and A Place Of Miracles Clothes Cottage.

"This was a time to invite the community in, and we've had an amazing turnout," Jenkins said. "Not only are people getting blessed with a word of encouragement, but they're also getting connected to a community that's going to help support and walk with them through life's ups and downs. Family makes it a little bit better and that's what we have here."

Jenkins shared what he has learned since the church has been serving the Richmond community for seven years.

"We've seen such a genuine response where people come along -- they're open about the struggles, we can get them connected to help and we walk them through into better seasons and that's what keeps us coming back over and over again," he said.
