PHOTOS: Richmond’s Main Street Station celebrates holidays with festive open house
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Holiday cheer continued in full swing this weekend, with the Richmond community joining in on some interactive holiday experiences at Main Street Station.
The second annual Main Street Station Holiday Magic Open House took place the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 7 -- an event described as "a community celebration filled with festive activities, seasonal treats and holiday cheer."
"We just wanted to provide an opportunity for the community to come and share the space with us," said Crystal Lowdery, the program and operations manager at Richmond's Main Street Station, located at 1500 E. Main Street. "We wanted to do a community event to offer an opportunity for endors, but also for the community to come and share this great space that we get to come to every day."
Last year's event drew more than 1,000 people, and Lowdery explained that they are collecting toys for drop-off at the front desk and nonprofit organizations available for Richmonders to donate, with 18 total this year -- up from five last year.

The event was followed by a movie night, with "National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation" playing upstairs in the station.
Guests were able to enjoy a free bike ride, cooking classes and a chance to learn more about what the office does -- the train station is managed by the Office of Equitable Transit and Mobility with the City of Richmond, Lawdery said.
"We just want people to know that they're welcome to come into our space," Lowdery said. "This space is not just for private events or high-ticketed events. This is a space for everybody, so we just thought the holidays [were] a great way to showcase the building and to showcase partnerships with our vendors, and just for everyone to have a good time this time of year."
The festivities also included children’s art and crafts, gift wrapping service, holiday music and caroling, warm seasonal beverages provided by The Len, vendor Market in partnership with Richmond Night Market and a shopping experience with local artisans and crafters.
In the future, organizers hope to expand the event with additional vendors, an ice rink, outdoor movie night and more entertainment options.
"We're just really excited to be in our second year of this and have the community coming in and letting them know they are welcome in our space," Lowdery said.
