Police brace for possible ‘teen takeover’ event at Chesterfield mall
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A "teen takeover" event is set to take place at a Chesterfield County mall this weekend, with police saying its officers are preparing to keep the peace.
On Thursday, March 19, the Chesterfield Police Department took to Facebook to speak on reports of a potential "takeover" event set for Saturday, March 21 at the Chesterfield Towne Center.
"Teen takeover" events have become a trend among teenagers across America -- one that can "quickly become dangerous," police said.
One such "takeover" took place in Henrico County's Short Pump Towne Center on Saturday, March 14, bringing out a large group of juveniles. Henrico authorities confirmed that two teens got into a fight during this event, but no report was filed, as they ran away.

In a video attached to the Facebook post, Chesterfield Police Chief Col. Frank Carpenter shows a flyer that is reportedly associated with the Chesterfield Towne Center "takeover" event. It advertises "music" and "vibes," inviting people to "pull up with friends" and "just have fun."
"Leave da drama at home," the flyer reads. "No fighting."
Carpenter said he's aware of the community's concerns surrounding these "takeover" events, which is why his department is taking this matter seriously. Chesterfield Police is coordinating with mall management and will increase its presence in and around Chesterfield Towne Center this weekend.
Anyone who plans to visit the mall this weekend and support a local business is welcome to do so. Chesterfield Police will be in place to help ensure safety. However, "any reckless behavior, disruptions or illegal activity will be addressed."

"Parents, please stay aware of your children’s activities, including social media," police said in the Facebook post. "Events like these can quickly become dangerous, and our priority is protecting lives."
Chesterfield is also not the only locality bracing for a potential "takeover" on Saturday. The Hanover County Sheriff's Office issued a similar message on Wednesday, March 18, after learning about plans to host such a "takeover" at King's Dominion on its opening day.
If you observe suspicious activity in Chesterfield this weekend, you are asked to reach out to the Chesterfield Police Department by calling its non-emergency line at 804-748-1251.
