Political Analyst: Environment good for Dems as Warner announces reelection campaign
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia Senator Mark Warner (D) is running for reelection.
“This environment is going to be a favorable one for Democrats, all indications are, and Mark Warner is one of the people who’s going to benefit, given the timing of when his term is up for reelection,” said Stephen Farnsworth, Director of the University of Mary Washington’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies.
In a video announcing his campaign, Warner highlighted the need to address job losses caused by technology.
Plus, Warner said, “We need universal healthcare coverage and a complete overhaul of affordable housing and child care.”

“The gubernatorial election gave, I think, Democrats in Virginia and nationally a template. Talking about the economy, blaming economic problems on President Trump. That's a winning hand for Abigail Spanberger, and that’s likely to be a winning hand for a lot of Democrats next year,” Farnsworth told 8News.
Farnsworth said that, given the timing of next year’s election, it will be tough for a Republican to unseat Warner in Congress.
“Presidential midterms are a referendum on a president, and there’s a lot of buyer's remorse regardless of who is elected president; we’re ready for something else, two years into that presidency,” Farnsworth said.
Several candidates, including Republican State Senator Bryce Reeves (R-Orange) and Spotsylvania School Board Member Lorita Daniels (D), have already announced their plans to challenge Warner.
