Powerball ticket worth $150,000 sold at Northern Virginia gas station, jackpot rises to $1 billion
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A ticket sold at a Wegmans in Fairfax County's McLean area won $150,000 in Wednesday evening's Powerball drawing, as the jackpot grows to $1 billion.
Virginia Lottery officials announced on Thursday, Dec. 11, that the winning ticket was purchased at Wegmans, located at 1835 Capital One Drive South in McLean.
In Wednesday night's drawing, no ticket in Virginia or anywhere else matched all six numbers to win the jackpot, so the estimated jackpot for the Saturday, Dec. 13 drawing grows to $1 billion, per Virginia Lottery.
"With Saturday night`s estimated $1 billion jackpot, if one ticket matches all six numbers, the winner will have a choice: either the full amount in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash option of approximately $461.3 million before taxes," Virginia Lottery officials said on Thursday.
Virginia Lottery profits, including those from the sale of Powerball tickets, go to K-12 education in the Commonwealth.
According to the release, in fiscal year 2025, the state's lottery raised more than $901 million for K-12 education, making up about 10% of the total K-12 school budget.
