Powhatan elementary students to compete in annual Future Chefs Culinary Challenge
POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Powhatan County Public Schools students are trading in their pencils for chefs' hats! Select students will compete in the “Future Chefs Culinary Challenge,” a live cooking competition, on Tuesday, March 18.
Two students from each elementary school -- Powhatan Elementary School, Flat Rock Elementary School and Pocahontas Elementary School -- were selected, so six students in total are competing. To be selected, they first had to submit a recipe of their choosing.
Each student will have an adult assigned as an assistant, their very own sous-chef, who will help them prepare their dishes. Once the students are done making their dish, they’ll present it to a panel of judges who choose the winner.

The competition was started by Sodexo’s Future Chefs program, and schools across 30 states participate in a contest just like this one.
The goal is not only to have fun in the kitchen, but to teach the students about nutrition and the mathematics that goes into cooking when measuring ingredients for a recipe.
The competition is at Powhatan High School starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
