Project to complete Richmond’s new traffic management system by fall 2026
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Richmond's Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin construction of the fourth phase of a new traffic management network next week, with plans to fully complete the $6.1 million project by fall of 2026.
With 463 of the city’s 490 signalized intersections upgraded and connected to a new communications network to its traffic management system for the Signalized Upgrade Project, the city said there are still 27 left to connect.
The signalized intersections are currently running without communications or with slow network performance, but the city said there are plans to fully integrate them into the existing traffic management software for full completion by the fall of 2026.
According to the city, there are numerous benefits to this new traffic management network, including:
- Creating a reliable communications network between the traffic management system and each signalized intersection
- Enhanced remote monitoring
- Coordinated signal operations for speed management and better pedestrian access
- Real time transit signal priority operations along the GRTC Pulse Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor
- Special events management
- Future emergency vehicle preemption
- Enhanced maintenance repairs
The city is warning drivers that there will be intermittent lane closures during this project.
