RIC explosive detection K-9 featured in TSA’s 2025 calendar
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC)-- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) releases a calendar each year with photos of TSA canines. This year, Richmonders might notice a familiar furry face. Hary the German Shephard works hard as an explosive detection canine at Richmond International Airport (RIC), but now, he's got some celebrity status as the September spread in TSA's 2025 calendar. (Courtesy of TSA) “I’m glad that he gets the recognition," said Hary's handler Kyle Smith. "Because you don’t understand how hard these dogs work.” Hary is six and a half years old and has been working at RIC for the past year. His job is to inspect passengers and areas at every terminal for explosives. (Courtesy of TSA) “Truly what these dogs do, and what you want them to do, he loves doing," Smith said. "He loves to work.” One of Richmond International Airport’s own makes it onto 2025 TSA Canine Calendar Smith is Hary's right hand man. The pair worked at Nashville and Charlotte International Airport before coming to Richmond, and have even worked events like the Super Bowl in Las Vegas last year. They work around 40 hours a week together, but they are roommates so they’re together almost 24/7. Hary and Kyle (Courtesy of TSA) Smith said he submitted multiple photos of Hary for the TSA 2025 calendar. “I guess this was our year," Smith said. The calendar is now available to download for free featuring photos of other pups from airports across the country. Smith said RIC will be getting more dogs in next year.
