Richmond among American Express’ 8 trending business travel destinations

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- American Express named Richmond as one of its eight trending destinations for business travel across the globe.

In a late July "Amex Trendex" piece on business travel, American Express said its survey of senior business leaders found that more than 9 in 10 believe business travel will either remain the same or increase over the next year.

With that in mind, American Express shared a list of eight places worldwide that it considered trending business travel destinations. This list was created based on "year-over-year growth in commercial customer or hotel and airline transactions."

Five of the locations are within the United States, with Richmond among them. American Express described Richmond as a "developing economic center in a business-supporting state."

"Already business-friendly and home to several Fortune 500 companies, Richmond is emerging as a major business travel hub thanks to incentive-based business expansion legislation, workforce development programs and a breadth of companies selecting the state for relocation and expansion," American Express said. "Significant economic developments are also underway in the Richmond Diamond District and City Center Innovation District, helping to make Richmond an ideal location for businesses to grow their footprint."

The full list is as follows:

  • Richmond, Virginia: "A developing economic center in a business-supporting state."
  • Charleston, South Carolina: "A Southern star in economic expansion."
  • Columbus, Ohio: "A capital city becoming known for more than meetings."
  • Boise, Idaho: "The Rocky Mountain West's emerging talent magnet."
  • New Orleans, Louisiana: "'Built to Host' in the Big Easy."
  • Kumamoto, Japan: "An international business powerhouse, fueled by semiconductor manufacturing."
  • Cork, Ireland: "Innovation, investment and Irish appeal."
  • Malmö, Sweden: "A Nordic hub with a startup mentality."
