Richmond City Council to discuss Greyhound bus stop, Shockoe Hill African Burying Grounds at meeting

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond City Council will make key decisions at a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. -- including a vote for the future cite for the city's Greyhound bus station. The Greyhound bus station on North Arthur Ashe Boulevard closed on October 20. Following that closure, Richmond’s Land Use, Housing, and Transportation Committee approved a contract allowing Greyhound to use Main Street Station Plaza for bus drop-offs and pick-ups. Since July, Greyhound has used part of Main Street Station for some bus drop offs and pickups, but not all. Tonight, councilmembers will hold the final vote to determine if Main Street Station's plaza will officially serve as the Greyhound bus stop. That's not the only thing on the agenda for tonight -- a potential ordinance that would designate the Shockoe Hill African Burying Grounds will also be discussed. The ordinance would designate the Shockoe Hill African Burying Grounds as an official cemetery. Established in the 1800s, this site was once one of the nation’s largest cemeteries for both free and enslaved African Americans. However, for years it has been neglected, now overshadowed by a billboard and a gas station. If the ordinance is approved, this designation may require Lamar Advertising to remove its billboard. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at City Hall, but if you want to join online you can do that here.
