Richmond City School Board member Shonda Harris-Mohammed to step down, join Hashmi’s team

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond City School Board member Shonda Harris-Mohammed will be stepping down from her post.

Harris-Mohammed announced her resignation during a Tuesday, Dec. 2 regular meeting, and that she will be serving a school division in the Commonwealth as CEO and acting superintendent. She did not share which school district she's joining.

"This will be, most likely, my last school board meeting with you," she said. "This is a bittersweet moment."

Harris-Mohammed also announced that she's joining Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi's transition team.

"This is not goodbye," she said. "This is just, 'I see you later' in another role."

Harris joined the school board in 2012 and served for four years. She resumed the post in 2021.

Under state law, the board will appoint an interim member until it can hold a special election for Harris-Mohammed's vacancy.
