Richmond community calls for end to ongoing violence after deadly triple shooting
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Tragedy in Richmond's Southside has sparked concern from the surrounding community. A local business owner is calling for more of a law enforcement presence after a Monday morning triple shooting left a man dead and two others hurt. Officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 5400 Block of Hull Street Road at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21. for a report of gunfire. Soon after, they were met with an upgraded report of a shooting in the 5700 block. At the scene, authorities found three people: two men and a woman. All had gunshot wounds. One of the two men, who was found unresponsive, died at the scene -- while the other two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. PREVIOUS: Man killed, two others hurt in Richmond triple shooting Jose Rodriguez is the owner of 'Go Mechanics,' an auto shop nearby. He explained to 8News that the recent murder only adds to the ongoing issue the community has seen after-hours. “It’s not just last night’s event -- it’s becoming a common thing where, violence is increasing in this area," Rodriguez said, adding that, during the weekend, the foot traffic of those leaving nightclubs creates different types of mayhem. "People come to drink and nothing but horrible things happen here from robberies to well — obscene situations and all of that.” Rodriguez takes daily measures to protect himself and his employees when at work, including pulling down the shop's front gate when it becomes completely dark. Even so, he said there is still a fear that, when it's time to open the gate again, something may happen. “If they put one police officer here, then they won’t try to do these things because there is a police presence," Rodriguez said. Police said this investigation is still ongoing. 8News has reached out to officials for an update on any arrests -- along with an identity for the deceased -- and is currently awaiting a response.
