Richmond concert series Friday Cheers celebrates 40 years

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News was joined by special guest Stephen Lecky on Monday to talk about Richmond's longest running concert series Friday Cheers ahead of its 40th season.

8News Anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall talked with Lecky, Director of Events at Venture Richmond, about what people can expect at Friday Cheers, which kicks off on Friday, May 2.

"Friday Cheers sort of makes its mark by bringing bands right before they make it big, and that's how we can offer $10 to $15 tickets," Lecky said. "Bands like The War and Treaty, which is sort of gospel country, we got indie rock, we got bluegrass, soul, funk -- you name it."

In the four decades since Friday Cheers' start, Lecky has worked with the event for 21 years. He explained what the concert series means to him.

"I can remember being a teenager and going to Friday Cheers, and so to have played a small part of it over the last few years, has been pretty awesome," Lecky said.

Lecky also mentioned that kids aged 12 and under get in for free, and there will be food vendors at the event as well. The concert series runs every Friday in May and June, and takes place at Brown's Island -- with doors opening at 6 p.m. and music starting at around 6:30 p.m.
