Richmond detectives report multiple outstanding homicides have recently been cleared
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department is reporting optimistic data for cleared homicides so far in 2025.
According to a social post by the police department, there was a case from six years ago that was "cleared" in January 2025. Additionally, the department announced one homicide case from 2021 and four cases from last year had been cleared in the same month.
There were 54 homicides reported last year and 34 have been cleared, which means the City of Richmond is above last year’s national average, according to the announcement.
Crime statistics announced in January showed there was an 18% decrease in murders -- with 65 incidents in 2023 dropping to 54 in 2024.
“No matter what year is on a calendar -- Major Crimes detectives will continue to exhibit perseverance and a remarkable determination to investigate homicides," the Richmond Police Department Facebook post reads. "Last year, detectives cleared a case from the 1990’s!"
