Richmond Flying Squirrels announce new general manager

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Flying Squirrels have named Anthony Opperman as the team's new general manager. The announcement was made Monday afternoon, March 31.

Opperman is a member of the Flying Squirrels' original staff and is in his third term with the club. He returned to the team in 2023, serving as an assistant general manager before transitioning to the team's chief marketing officer last season.

The team's previous general manager, Ben Rothrock, had served in that position since 2017 before becoming chief operating officer in 2023.

According to a press release from the team, the move will allow Rothrock to focus his efforts on the construction of CarMax Park, which is expected to become the team's new stadium and multi-use entertainment venue.

"As Ben Rothrock’s responsibilities in the Squirrels organization grow, it’s natural that Anthony Oppermann should become the third GM in Richmond Flying Squirrels history," said Lou DiBella, the Flying Squirrels' managing partner. "Opp has been an integral part of what we do and has earned this exciting opportunity."

The Flying Squirrels are currently preparing for their 2025 season opener, scheduled for Friday, April 4, against the Akron RubberDucks, with Hall of Fame inductee and former Braves pitcher John Smoltz throwing the first pitch.

Tickets for all 2025 Flying Squirrels games are now on sale on the official Flying Squirrels website.
