Richmond, Henrico health officials urge residents to have Asthma Action Plan

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month kicks off in May, the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts are urging residents to talk to their doctor if they have asthma in order to keep an updated Asthma Action Plan.

According to an announcement from health officials on Thursday, May 1, the plan should be shared with caregivers, school nurses and summer camp staff, and those with asthma or asthma-like symptoms should consult their doctor to receive treatment.

“One of the most useful steps families can take to promote asthma health is to make sure you have an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan to share with caregivers and school, or summer camp staff,” said Richmond and Henrico Health Districts' Childhood Health Coordinator Becca Bruhl. “An asthma action plan gives kids, caregivers, and school staff a step-by-step guide to manage symptoms, avoid triggers, and know exactly what to do in an emergency. It's a vital tool for keeping children healthy, active, and in school."

Richmond, which is considered an Asthma Capital, according to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America, is also the eighth on the list of most difficult places to live with seasonal allergies.

Richmond and Henrico Health Districts is encouraging community members to manage asthma by following these steps:

  • Make an appointment with your doctor and your child’s doctor over the summer.
  • Follow your Asthma Action Plan to keep asthma under control.
  • Manage your home’s indoor air quality.
  • Wear a mask in crowded places, wash hands properly and avoid sick people.
  • Get rest and adequate sleep. Hydrate and eat healthy food.
  • Plan to get updated vaccines for fall respiratory infections, including flu and COVID-19.
