Richmond International Airport braces for potential delays ahead of another winter storm
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With another winter storm approaching Central Virginia, travelers flying out of Richmond International Airport (RIC) are urged to plan ahead for potential delays.
In a release shared on Friday, Jan. 30, RIC urged passengers to allow extra time and check their flight status before leaving the house, as a winter storm is expected to bring two to four inches of snow on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Airport officials are also concerned about lingering icy and slick streets and sidewalks, as Central Virginia was hit by a winter storm the previous weekend that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain.
“Our team at Richmond International Airport is committed to keeping the airport operating smoothly and is taking the necessary steps to prepare for another winter storm,” said Perry J. Miller, president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Commission. “Continued low temperatures combined with additional accumulation are likely to present an ongoing challenge, but the airport will be working closely with its airfield partners to prioritize safety and minimize disruptions.”
Flights once again may be delayed or canceled due to the winter weather.
The previous winter storm prompted several cancellations across much of the East Coast, including at RIC. On Sunday, Jan. 25, airport officials said that 140 flights were canceled.
Though cancellations have decreased as conditions have improved at RIC, the airport is urging travelers to brace for potential disruptions heading into the weekend.
Before arriving at the airport, passengers are encouraged to use their airline’s mobile app or website to check their flight status.
RIC’s snow teams will work alternating 12-hour shifts around the clock to handle snow removal
on the airfield, roadways, parking lots and walkways, per a release.
