Richmond launches new Equity Zone Program, offers 50% off scooter rides to some residents
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Office of Equitable Transit and Mobility (OETM) has launched a new Equity Zone Program, which aims to reduce transportation fees and increase accessibility for Richmond residents.
The OETM, a Department of Public Works division, partnered with Richmond’s micro-mobility vendor Bird and subsidiary company, Spin, to launch the program, which offers 50% off scooter rides for residents living in identified neighborhoods.
The new Equity Zone Program will define equity zones and neighborhoods. According to the city's Department of Public Works, the program will provide riders who live and begin their trip within a zone with a 50% discount on all scooter rides.
While eligible residents receive the discount regardless of their registration status, those who register for the program will receive the same 50% discount for all rides no matter where they access the scooter in the city. As a result, the city says these riders are not limited to starting their scooter trip within an equity zone.
The following are the equity zone neighborhoods in Richmond:
- Fairfield Court
- Gilpin Court
- Hillside Court
- Mosby Court
- Whitcomb Court
After riders access scooters in the equity zones, they will automatically receive an email from Bird and Spin about how they can register for the program. Residents can also register by visiting the individual apps for Bird and Spin.
