Richmond leaders announce plans for city’s future, new initiatives

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A course on government activities, a helpful tool for local businesses and a brand new city department and more are all coming to Richmond, leaders say.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, Richmond's chief administrative officer (CAO) Odie Donald, II provided an update on his first 100 days in office.

During Tuesday's event, Donald touched on a variety of topics, exploring both the wins and the challenges that his office faced during his initial days as the leader of City Hall. He also announced several new programs and initiatives that are in the works.

This includes the educational "RVA University," which will serve as a way for interested Richmond residents to learn more about their city's government.

"In our attempts to provide the greatest access to services, RVA University will provide key insights into service delivery, governance and policy-making that are important for residents to be aware of," the city said in a booklet handed out at Tuesday's event. "We believe that when government works, it is because citizens are engaged."

Those who complete this program will receive a certificate, Donald said.

Donald also announced a Richmond "Blue Book," which will outline what goods and services the city government aims to procure, or purchase, within the next year.

According to Donald, this will give businesses -- especially local and small businesses -- a "roadmap" of contracted job opportunities available to them.

Richmond is also planning to create its own Department of Transportation, which the city describes as an agency that will "provide quality infrastructure improvements to better the safety, equity and mobility" of the River City.

"To remain competitive and support anticipated growth, the city requires a transportation network that reduces automobile reliance and offers convenient, affordable and safe travel alternatives," the city said.

This new department will coordinate transportation throughout Richmond and will be equipped with the tools to plan, design, construct and maintain the city's transportation network. Per the city, it will serve as a "one-stop shop" for both citizens and external agencies alike.

It's important to note that, at this time, city officials have not released further information on these programs and initiatives. We also do not yet know when they will actually become a reality.
