Richmond man sentenced to more than three years for illegally possessing gun

RICHMOND, Va. (WRC) — A Richmond man was sentenced to more than three years in prison on Wednesday after law enforcement saw him pointing a gun at his ex-girlfriend, according to the Department of Justice.

On Wednesday, May 28, 28-year-old Trevon Barfield was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to court documents from Aug. 12, 2023, officers with the Richmond Police Department responded to a 911 call, which reported a man pointing the firearm at his ex-girlfriend.

Barfield had an outstanding arrest warrant, according to the Department of Justice.

Police found Barfield at the apartment complex at the top of a stairwell. Officers noticed a bulge in Barfield's front pants pocket, which he believed was a gun, as Barfield reached for the object.

After a brief struggle, officers detained Barfield and found a handgun, which was "loaded with 21 rounds of ammunition," according to the Department of Justice. Officers also found cocaine in Barfield's pocket.

Officials said that Barfield had previously been convicted of possession of cocaine, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon in a correctional facility.

As a previously convicted felon, Barfield cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition.
