Richmond Mayor Avula shares steps to prepare for winter weather
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As the city of Richmond prepares for winter weather expected this weekend, Mayor Danny Avula has shared steps that residents can take to prepare for potential impacts.
On Wednesday, Jan. 21, Avula posted a video on social media that announced the city was preparing for winter weather and listed several steps that Richmond residents can take to prepare.
"We're currently engaging in critical preparedness activities," Avula said regarding city operations.
As for residents, Avula recommended that they stock up on basic supplies before the weather hits and check on neighbors.
Once you have what you need, Avula suggested that residents sign up for Richmond Ready Alerts by texting RVAREADY to 888-777 or by visiting the city's website.
These alerts provide updates to residents during severe weather emergencies.
In addition, residents were reminded of the Inclement Weather Shelter located at 1900 Chamberlayne Ave., which is open to those in need in the Richmond area from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m., with extended hours when temperatures drop. Visit the city's website or call 311 for more information.
When the winter weather hits, Avula urged residents to stay off the roads, if possible, so that crews can work to clear them.
"Stay safe, stay ready and stay warm," Avula said.
