Richmond packaging plant to shut down, affecting 110 employees
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Richmond packaging plant is closing its facility along Richmond Highway in June 2026, affecting 110 employees, according to a Virginia WARN letter.
On Tuesday, March 31, Mark Romaniuk, deputy general counsel for the Packaging Corporation of America (PCA), notified the state, as well as Richmond Mayor Danny Avula, that the packing manufacturer would be closing its facility at 2000 Richmond Highway, effective Monday, June 1.
"It is anticipated that the permanent plant closure will affect all employees at the location," Romaniuk wrote.
He said that hourly production and maintenance employees are represented by the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union.
While Romaniuk did note that there may be a few employees asked to stay beyond the 60-day WARN notification period, he emphasized that "all employee separations are expected to occur no later than the end of the month" of June.
PCA will work with the state and local government officers, including the Virginia Dislocated Worker Program, to offer dislocated worker assistance to impacted employees.
They will also help those who may interested in transferring to another PCA location with open positions.
"This was a difficult business decision; it is no way a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our valued employees," Romaniuk wrote.
