RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond's Capitol Square kicked off the holiday season on Wednesday evening, with the lighting of the 25-foot Christmas tree grown in Grayson County.

The annual event -- which began at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3 -- featured the massive 25-foot Fraser fir tree, grown in Grayson County’s Whitetop area, which has a 30-foot circumference at its base.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin called this event "an honor it is to stand here together on this most important evening," as this year marks the 66th tree lighting at Capitol Square.

"When we gather together here, we are gathering together as more than just Virginians," Youngkin said on Wednesday evening. "We are gathering together as fellow men, women and children who look forward to this season with great anticipation -- a season that is defined by so much more than just a tree."

The event also includes the Executive Mansion Holiday Open House, which gives visitors a tour of the Virginia Executive Mansion, the nation’s oldest continuously occupied governor’s mansion. The mansion was decked out with seasonal displays.
