RPS places Chief Talent Officer on administrative leave after ‘toxic workplace’ allegations
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Public School (RPS) leaders have placed the Chief Talent Officer following allegations from employees of creating a toxic work environment in the Talent and Finance department.
A letter sent from Superintendent Jason Kamras to the RPS Talent Office, revealed that Maggie Clemmons, the Chief Talent Officer, has been placed on administrative leave and an investigation into the allegations had begun.
“I am reaching out to address the concerns that have been expressed about the culture in the Talent Office,” said Kamras.
This comes after 18 RPS workers composed a 58-page document accusing the talent department of racism and harassment among several other discriminatory practices at the Feb.4th school board meeting.
“I hope all you all know how deeply I believe in our moto -- to Teach, Lead, and Serve with Love-which is why it pains me to hear the allegations that have been made," said Kamras. "I take these concerns very seriously, which is why an investigation by an independent third party will explore them thoroughly.”
Though she does not report to the Chief Talent Officer, Evans, alongside the other employees who gathered Tuesday night, expressed dissatisfaction with RPS leadership, citing overwork and discriminatory practices in the Talent and Finance department.
“The culture within the central office department often foster favoritism, toxic environment, bullying, so blatant disregard for employee’s mental well-being and their families,” said Lameeka Evans, payroll technician.
“RPS school motto is ‘ Teach, lead and serve with love.’ How about adding, ‘How you love?’ And that starts with having a chief who respects the staff,” said Jodie Granger, executive office associate.
Kamras also stated that Shareyna Chang, Chief of Staff at RPS, will manage the Talent Office during Clemmons’ absence.
“Please understand that these steps are intended to protect the integrity of the process, and do not in any way suggest any determination about the pending allegations,” Kamras said.
8News reached out to a spokesperson about this investigation and they say will not comment on personnel matters.
