Santa takes to the skies in Petersburg to deliver gifts to kids

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Santa Claus! The City of Petersburg spread holiday cheer with a surprise visit from Santa, thanks to the help of Petersburg Fire and Rescue.

The visit from Mr. Claus was made on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Albert Jones Athletic Field in true Christmas fashion, but instead of riding in on reindeer, he descended from the skies on the LifeEvac helicopter.

"Cheers filled the air, hearts were warmed, and Christmas came alive right before our eyes," said the post.

The stunt came just in time for Christmas, as gifts were also given out amongst the awaiting children in the area.

According to a post from Petersburg officials, the excitement from kids standing nearby was instant.

"The moment the helicopter landed and Santa stepped out of the bird with arms full of presents, the children’s faces lit up with pure joy, laughter, and disbelief," per the post.

The moment was made possible with the help of VCU, Petersburg Social Services, LifeEvac and others who worked behind the scenes.

"This is the spirit of giving at its finest in the City of Petersburg," the post read.
