Search continues for man who shot park ranger on Belle Isle

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond police have provided an update in the search to locate the suspect in the Belle Isle shooting on Sunday afternoon that left a park ranger wounded. At approximately 1:42 p.m., officers with the Richmond Police Department received a call for a shooting report at Belle Isle. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an Urban Park Ranger who said he had an encounter with a man in the park, during which he offered the man shelter. This encounter resulted in him being shot in the chest by the man, according to police. The ranger was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time and only had minor injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. In response to this incident, officers attempted to identify a crime scene and hold witnesses for interviews. While they did this, officers asked anyone who approached the crime scene to leave to protect the integrity of the area, so they could do a proper search. Additional officers and detectives were on hand in the area to thoroughly search Belle Isle, according to police. Police continue to search for the suspect involved in this incident. According to police, they are looking for a 5'11" Black man believed to be in his late 30s, with a short patchy beard and short, unkempt hair. He was wearing a black winter coat and all the clothing he was wearing was dirty. Police are asking people to avoid the area while the search continues. Anyone with information is urged to call 911.
