Spot birds, help science: Great Backyard Bird Count 2026 returns this weekend
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Looking for a fun and meaningful activity this weekend? Virginians now have the opportunity to participate in a bird counting event while contributing to important scientific research.
Each year in February, millions of people count the species of birds that they spot in their backyards over four days. This year, the count will take place between Friday, Feb. 13, and Monday, Feb. 16.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has encouraged curious and seasoned birders to participate in the count, as the observations help contribute to scientists' research on bird populations before spring migration.
The compiled data support research at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, which monitor species health and location, according to the DCR.
Those looking to participate can do so by themselves or with others. For each day of the event, folks can watch birds for at least 15 minutes and log all the birds they see or hear over the four-day count.
Beginner bird admirers can use the Merlin Bird ID app to identify the birds. Seasoned bird watchers who previously participated in the count can use the eBird Mobile app to record the numbers of birds or enter the bird list on the eBird website.
See instructions for Merline Bird ID, eBird Mobile and eBird desktop.
Participants can also log their observations and participate at any Virginia State Parks or Virginia Natural Area Preserves with public access. Many parks have bird guides and binoculars available for borrowing free of charge.
