StormTracker 8: Messy weather continues until Thursday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -Our messy weather continues into the overnight hours before it tapers off to flurries north and drizzle south.  And another burst of weather will be on the way to the area for later tomorrow and into Thursday. As expected, the winner for snowfall have been to the north of us, with locations about 15 miles to the north of I-64 and mainly west of I-95 having seen close to 6” of snow.  And out along the Blue Ridge, there have been some reports of up to 9”-10”. That fits in fairly well with the snowfall forecast, while areas in the dark gray are done with snow (and there were 3”-4” reports in the morning) but still seeing a rain/ice mix.  Due to the mild road surface temperatures, many of the roads to the south of the James River are in very good shape. OK, for tonight we will see the mixed precipitation over us and the snow to our north all taper off after might to very light stuff. Lows will be close to freezing so that show keep a lot of the roads in good condition. Tomorrow, clouds and drizzle in the morning, with rain returning by late afternoon. Note that up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this will be freezing rain, and they have an Ice Storm Warning for tomorrow afternoon into Thursday. Rain continue tomorrow night and into Thursday morning, but then by late in the day we will see some sun return. That would allow for highs to jump into the 50s over us. We don not have much of a break before the next system arrives for later Saturday with rain, and then showers on Sunday.  This system won’t be a winter threat for us here in Central Virginia, but there are signs of one possible for later next week. Note with the rain/snow, then rain and then more rain over the weekend, there is increasing confidence that when all of this comes downstream early next week that the James River could possibly go into moderate flood stage.   That needs to be watched.
