StormTracker 8: Off and on snow through Thursday AM
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Round one of the snow will taper off through the evening hours as the best forcing shifts down into the southeastern part of the state. This will lead to the best accumulations from this storm being confined to the southeastern corner of the state (In a way this is very similar to February of 1989. Snow, then severe thunderstorms are few days later, and then a system that had better snow in Norfolk than hers). As the upper-level system passes over the area tomorrow, we will get a band of snow showers that will come through during the morning hours. By later in the afternoon, clearing skies will start to take over in the region for us. So, when it is all said and done, the heaviest accumulations will be in the southeast 1/3 of the state with a broad band of 2”-5” over much of the state. That’s due to how dry this snow happens to be. After starting off in the teens on Thursday, a little afternoon sun should be enough to allow for us to inch back up into the upper 20s and the lower 30s. A higher sun angle will allow for some of this flurry snow to start melting. Friday and Saturday will be sunny in the area with warmer temperatures making a return over us. Mild weather looks to be on the way for next week, with some of the models hinting at a 60 degree temperature towards mid-week. This will be ahead of the next weather system which is due to bring rain in here as early as Wednesday night. Long range—well the first 10 days of March look to support an active weather pattern in the east.
