StormTracker8: Showery and windy today; coastal flooding

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A strong coastal system will impact Virginia for today and tonight bringing rain, wind and coastal flooding.

Light rain and rain showers will be persistent throughout the day making it a wet and windy day. The winds will begin to kick up across Metro Richmond and Central Virginia. Look for those winds to start to become gusty during the late morning through the afternoon and into the evening.

Along I-95 and a little bit to the west and east we will be looking for winds to gust between 20 to 30 mph. Along the Chesapeake Bay and the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula, and the Lower Peninsula winds will gust between 30 to 50 mph. Farther to the west along the Piedmont of Virginia and then into the upslope of the Shenandoah Valley winds will gust between 10 to 20 mph.

We will also have the risk of coastal flooding in fact there is a coastal flood warning in effect through Monday morning for all of our tidal river counties and our Chesapeake Bay locations. We could be looking at a prolonged period of coastal flooding beginning tomorrow afternoon all the way through Monday morning. So, if you live in low lying areas in the Northern Neck, the Middle peninsula or the Lower Peninsula please be ready for flooding.

Monday, this system will still be nearby giving us more clouds and the risk of showers throughout the day. It will be a cool day with highs in the middle 60s.

Showers might even hold on for early Tuesday morning before partly sunny skies return in the afternoon. It will remain cool with highs in the middle to upper 60s.

Wednesday will be a wonderful day with partly sunny skies across Central Virginia and highs near 70.

Looking ahead to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we should see mostly sunny skies with highs in the middle 60s.

There is the chance for another system to bring us more rain next Sunday.
