StormTracker8: VIPIR Alert Today for Winter Storm
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Snow is coming down out there and some locations are already seeing buildup. Roadways are slick, but patches of ice, especially on bridges, are possible. Stay home if you can; if you have to be driving, leave early and drive especially slow.
Temperatures are in the low 30s across the state. Most of Central Virginia is receiving snowfall, but folks near the Virginia/North Carolina line are experiencing rain or a wintry precipitation mix.
Snow is forecast to continue at this rate through the late morning. Around 11am, coverage will begin to drop. Through the afternoon, isolated pop ups of snow, sleet, or wintry mix is possible for a few of us, but the vast majority of Central Virginia is looking dry after 2pm. Temperatures will be in the mid 30s at best and roads will be slick this afternoon.
Snow accumulation is still expected to fall between 1 and 3 inches for metro Richmond and surrounding areas, with areas north of Ashland receiving lower totals and areas south of the Tri-Cities receiving lower totals as well. Locations closest to the VA/NC line aren't expected to see much in the way of snow accumulation, but a thin coating of ice is possible, especially once temperatures drop on Friday night.
We are not expecting precipitation in the overnight hours. However, as temperatures drop to the 20s, wet roads are expected to freeze. I believe the roads will be more dangerous on Saturday morning than they are today, due to this re freeze that could cause numerous icy roads. Please keep this in mind for any Saturday morning plans.
Saturday afternoon highs will be in the 40s, so snow will not linger for long. Sunday morning lows will be below freezing again, and Sunday highs will be in the 40s as well. Both weekend days will be cloudy, but dry.
Next week is starting dry but cold, with highs on Monday forecast to be in the 30s. We will slowly warm through the week ahead of our next frontal boundary set for Thursday night.
