Study launched to assess the future of Pocahontas Landmark Center
POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The board of supervisors is partnering with the school board in Powhatan to conduct a feasibility study about the Pocahontas Landmark Center (PLC).
During a Feb. 23 meeting, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to work with the Powhatan County School Board to evaluate PLC renovations through a feasibility study.
The board of supervisors approved a resolution for county staff to add the feasibility study to the proposed fiscal year 2026 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Staff must also solicit proposals from qualified firms in order to conduct the study.
The total cost of the feasibility study will not exceed $200,000 and will be financed from previously allocated project funds that are from the fiscal year 2025 debt issuance, according to the release.
"The collaborative partnership with the Powhatan County School Board and its willingness to utilize previously allocated PLC project funds in support of this shared initiative, representing a unified and responsible step forward in evaluating the future of the Pocahontas Landmark
Center for the benefit of the Powhatan County community,” the board stated.
“I’m excited about working together with the School Board in this collaborative effort,” said Bill Donati, the chairman of the board of supervisors. “This [study] will put us in a position where we can get all of the data in front of the community.”
The study will inspect renovation options, additional costs, ideas for potential funding and considerations for decisions on capital investment for the future, per the release.
The study will be conducted with school staff and will include evaluations about health, safety and environmental considerations for the use of unused parts of the facility.
As well as figuring out all plans that should be implemented to ensure that occupied areas stay protected.
Due to the school division owning the building, it will partner with managing the project, while the county will monitor the procurement process and issue the Request for Proposals (RFP) in regard to county policy.
