Suspect in Powhatan vehicle break-in, larcenies arrested after traffic stop for speeding
POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 23-year-old suspect in a reported vehicle break-in and multiple larcenies has been arrested following a traffic stop for speeding early Wednesday morning in Powhatan County.
At around 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, a Powhatan County Sheriff's Office patrol sergeant reportedly stopped a vehicle for driving 81 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 60 near Carter Gallier Boulevard.
According to the sheriff's office, during the traffic stop, the sergeant recognized a passenger in the vehicle who was a suspect in at least one vehicle break-in that occurred on May 6 in Fighting Creek Park in Powhatan County.
Officials said the passenger falsely identified herself, and further investigation resulted in the woman -- identified as 23-year-old Destiny Alexis Duncan, of Portsmouth -- being taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for trespassing in Portsmouth.
Duncan was charged with credit card larceny, credit card fraud, conspiring to commit larceny, identity theft and falsely identifying herself to law enforcement, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said Duncan is also a suspect in multiple larcenies in other jurisdictions.
The investigation is ongoing, with possible additional charges pending.
