Suspect’s mother identified as victim of stabbing in Powhatan County domestic assault
POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The person who died after being stabbed during a domestic assault in Powhatan County Saturday night has been identified by officials as the suspect's mother.
On Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 52-year-old Melissa Ann Seamster, of Powhatan.
Officials said Seamster is the mother of the suspect in the case, 31-year-old Cody Mulchi, of Chase City County.
This comes after deputies with the sheriff's office initially responded to the 2000 block of Red Lane Road for a reported domestic assault at around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
When deputies arrived, they found a man and Seamster injured with severe stab wounds. Seamster was given first aid and CPR was attempted, but officials said she died before being taken to the hospital.
The man was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition, per officials.
Officers also responded Saturday night to a neighboring residence, where a short standoff took place, and took Mulchi into custody. Mulchi was injured at the time and was taken to the hospital.
Officials said Mulchi is currently in stable condition. He is facing several charges, including:
- Second-degree murder
- Stabbing with intent to maim, kill, etc.
- Assault and battery of a family or household member
