Suspended Hopewell councilor to serve no jail time for embezzlement of public funds conviction
HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- Dominic Holloway, who is suspended from the Hopewell City Council, will serve no jail time for his conviction of embezzling public funds.
Holloway appeared in Charles City County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Sept. 2, where he was handed 10 years of supervised probation.
He was also sentenced to five years with five years suspended, which means he will not serve jail time.
Holloway was initially suspended by the court from his councilor position on July 31, after a jury found him guilty of embezzling public funds on July 29, and the city petitioned for his suspension the following day.
A judge will be responsible for naming Holloway’s replacement during his suspension. City council has been asked to provide a list of recommendations, but the judge does not have to choose from that list.
Holloway’s suspension is only in place until he exhausts his appeals to his conviction.
After Sept. 2, Holloway will have 30 days to file an appeal of his conviction, however if he fails to file, his seat will be forfeited. This cannot be reversed. Otherwise, he does not forfeit until all appeals are exhausted.
Once Holloway's seat is forfeited, the council can then choose the replacement to serve the rest of Holloway’s term, which expires at the end of 2026.
