Tax relief coming to some Virginians. Who qualifies?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Some Virginia taxpayers will receive $200 or $400 tax rebates this October. Here's how you can find out if you qualify.

The budget bill that the Virginia General Assembly passed and Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed in May included about $1 billion in tax relief for eligible Virginians.

That relief will come in the form of a rebate check. Qualifying taxpayers who filed individually will receive $200, while couples will receive $400.

"This fall’s tax rebate reflects a simple truth: it’s your money, not the government’s," Youngkin said in a Sept. 24 press release.

But who qualifies? Eligible taxpayers are those who incurred a state tax liability -- meaning you owed taxes -- in 2024. You'll also need to ensure your taxes are filed no later than Nov. 3.

You can also check your eligibility using this website starting on Thursday, Sept. 25.

If you qualify and you filed your taxes prior to July 1, your tax rebate check will be sent out by Oct. 15 and you should receive it by the end of the month.

If you received your 2024 tax refund via direct deposit, you'll get your rebate check the same way. Otherwise, you'll receive a paper rebate check through the mail.

Notably, if you owe money to Virginia Tax or any other state or local agency, your rebate will be used to satisfy your debt. If any funds are left over after that debt is satisfied, you will receive the remainder. Anyone whose entire rebate is used in this way will be notified via letter.
