‘The People’s Hearing’: A group against Dominion Energy’s Chesterfield gas plant to meet Tuesday
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A community group against Dominion Energy's plans to bring a gas plant to Chesterfield County is holding a public meeting in the evening on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Friends of Chesterfield will meet at what it's calling the ‘People’s Hearing.’ This comes after months of push-back against the Dominion Energy gas plant, as the group emphasizes risks including air quality and energy cost. Dominion Energy is calling the plant the Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC) and it's set to be located on Coxendale Road where the existing power station is. For months, CERC has been the subject of numerous meetings and protests. Dominion said on its website that the plant will not be used as an everyday power source, but only when other sources are unavailable to meet customers’ energy needs. But Friends of Chesterfield think this plant is just moving away from the state’s goal of more clean energy. Just last week, Dominion announced that it's on track to getting its permits approved and anticipates construction to begin in 2026, and operation to begin in 2029. The People’s Hearing starts at 6 p.m. at Thomas Dale High School, located at 3626 West Hundred Road in the Chester area of the county. Five Virginia lawmakers are set to be there, including Debra Gardner (76th District- D) and Delores McQuinn (81st District- D) who represent Chesterfield.
