Three people injured in crash involving box truck on I-95 in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Three people were injured in a crash involving an overturned box truck on Interstate 95 in Richmond on Halloween morning.

Around 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, Virginia State Police troopers responded to a three-vehicle crash on I-95 southbound, near the exit ramp for I-64 East.

Police said an initial investigation revealed that a commercial box truck and another vehicle were traveling in the exit lane to Exit 75 when a third vehicle from the I-95 crossed over into the exit lane and hit the others.

Police continue to investigate why the third vehicle left the mainline.

Three people were taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a release from Virginia State Police, around 1 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and recovery crews were working to remove the overturned box truck from the lane. Officials were reportedly dragging the vehicle down the I-64 East exit ramp to the Third Street emergency area in order to upright the vehicle.

It's unclear how long the lane will remain closed at this time. However, police said there are no major spills or leaks, but there is a "small amount of oil" from the box truck.

The exit ramp was closed for a few hours but has since reopened, according to a police spokesperson.

The crash remains under investigation.
